About
Bowness and Windermere in the English Lake District...
The
town of of Bowness-on-Windermere and village of Windermere
are located on the eastern side of Lake Windermere - the largest
lake in England.
Originally
frequented by the Victorian gentry as a holiday destination,
the area is today popular with visitors of all ages looking
for a central location from which to enjoy the beauty of the
English Lake District.
The poet
William Wordsworth, who for a time lived in Grasmere
just up the road, was also a regular visitor and patronised
the White Lion (now the Royal Hotel) as well as a frequent
user of the Lake Windermere ferry which still runs taking
visitors from just outside the town of Bowness across to Sawrey
and Hawkshead
on the western side of the lake.
